When the economy falls, money is short, people are pulling their stocks and not willing to spend money, top companies have only one option to try to encourage stock holders to continue to hold those stocks; lay offs. The people at the top of this multi-million dollar company don't care about employees far below them they don't even know the names of, they only care about their money, income, and state of living. So why do lay offs happen? If money has to be stretched they get rid of people so they don't have to stretch as far. So, that being said, I have a question; what do you think will happen if we raise taxes dramatically on these companies to help 'distribute the wealth'? I can assure you that it won't just distribute the wealth, it will also increase unemployment... and it will be much higher than just 1,500 people.
